Plug and Charge is one of those EV features that sounds brilliant on paper. You arrive at a charger, plug in, and everything else happens automatically. No apps, no RFID cards, no standing in the rain trying to get your phone’s NFC to work. The charger recognises your car, starts the session, and bills you directly. Genuinely clever stuff.
The reality in the UK right now? It’s a bit of a postcode lottery, and not the geographical kind. Whether you can actually use Plug and Charge depends on which car you drive, which network you’re charging at, and occasionally whether your manufacturer has bothered to flick the switch on their end.
How Plug and Charge Actually Works
Plug and Charge uses a standard called ISO 15118, which essentially allows your car and the charger to have a secure conversation. When you plug in, the charger asks your car who it is, your car provides encrypted credentials, and the charger verifies these with the network. Think of it like your car having a digital passport that charging points can read.
The important bit: both your car and the charging network need to support this technology. Having one without the other is like having a contactless card at a shop that only takes cash.
Which Cars Support Plug and Charge in the UK?
This is where it gets frustrating. Quite a few EVs have the hardware for Plug and Charge, but not all manufacturers have enabled it yet.
Actually working right now:
Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y (at Tesla Superchargers only), Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, Cupra Born (on some networks), Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 (though activation has been patchy), Audi e-tron GT, and the BMW iX and i4. Mercedes EQS and EQE models also support it, at least in theory.
Should support it but often don’t:
This is the annoying category. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 both have ISO 15118 hardware, but UK activation has been inconsistent. Some owners report it working, others see nothing. Genesis GV60 is in a similar boat. Polestar 2 gained the capability through an update, but real-world implementation has been hit and miss.
If you’re buying an EV specifically because the spec sheet mentions Plug and Charge, ask the dealer for a straight answer about whether it’s actually enabled. Better yet, ask other owners on forums or social media. They’ll tell you the truth.
Which UK Charging Networks Support It?
The network side is slightly more straightforward, though still not comprehensive.
Ionity has the best implementation. Multiple car brands work reliably with their chargers, and when it works, it’s genuinely seamless. You plug in, hear a clunk, and charging starts. Their coverage is mainly motorway services, so perfect for long journeys.
bp pulse supports Plug and Charge at many of their newer 150kW and 300kW chargers. I’ve heard mixed reports, reliability seems better with Ford and Porsche than with some VW Group cars, but when it works, it’s convenient.
Tesla Superchargers work flawlessly with Teslas, obviously. They’re now opening to other brands, but Plug and Charge is still Tesla-only at these sites. Other cars need the Tesla app.
Gridserve has been testing Plug and Charge at some locations, but it’s not widely available yet. Similarly, other major networks like Osprey, InstaVolt, and Pod Point don’t currently support it, though several have it on their roadmap.
The honest truth: most of your charging in the UK still requires an app or contactless payment. Plug and Charge is a nice bonus when it works, not something you can rely on everywhere.
Does It Actually Matter?
I’ve used Plug and Charge with a borrowed Taycan on Ionity chargers, and yes, it’s lovely. There’s something genuinely satisfying about just plugging in and walking away. No fumbling with your phone, no checking the app has connected properly.
But is it worth influencing your buying decision? Probably not on its own. Most charging apps are fairly reliable these days, contactless payment is becoming standard, and apps like Zapmap or Octopus Electroverse let you roam across multiple networks with one account. The faff factor has reduced considerably.
Where Plug and Charge really shines is consistency. Apps can crash, phones can die, contactless readers can be temperamental. When Plug and Charge works, it just works. That peace of mind on a long journey has genuine value, especially if you’re new to EVs and worried about the charging experience.
The frustrating bit is that we’re in this halfway house where the technology exists, some cars and chargers support it, but it’s not reliable enough to depend on. You’ll still need a backup plan, which rather defeats the point.
Practical Advice
If you’re buying an EV now, check whether Plug and Charge is enabled, not just theoretically supported. If it is, and you regularly use Ionity or bp pulse chargers, it’s a nice bonus. If you’re choosing between two similar cars and one has working Plug and Charge, that might tip the balance.
But don’t pay significantly more for it, and definitely don’t avoid an otherwise perfect car because it lacks the feature. Download Zapmap, set up accounts with the main networks you’ll use, and keep a contactless card as backup. That’ll serve you better than relying on Plug and Charge alone.
The technology will improve. More cars will enable it, more networks will support it, and eventually it might become the default. Right now though? It’s a convenience feature that occasionally works brilliantly, not the revolution the marketing suggests.
