Plug and Charge Explained: Which EVs and Networks Actually Support It in the UK?

You arrive at a charging station, plug in your car, and walk away. No app to open, no RFID card to tap, no fumbling with your phone in the rain. That’s the promise of Plug and Charge, a technology that’s supposed to make public charging as simple as filling up with petrol. The reality? It works brilliantly when it works, but the ‘when’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

What Actually Is Plug and Charge?

Plug and Charge (also known by its technical standard ISO 15118) lets your car and the charger communicate directly when you plug in. Think of it like contactless payment, but instead of your bank card talking to the card reader, your car talks to the charging point. The charger recognises your vehicle, verifies your payment details, and starts charging automatically.

The technical bit: your car has a digital certificate stored in it, a bit like a very secure password that proves who you are. When you plug in, the car and charger exchange encrypted messages to confirm everything’s legitimate, then billing happens in the background. You get an email receipt later, same as with an app, but without actually doing anything.

The practical benefit is obvious. No searching for which app this particular network needs. No wondering if you’ve got mobile signal. No standing in the cold trying to scan a QR code that’s been vandalised or weathered into illegibility.

Which Cars Support It?

This is where things get messy. Most newer EVs have the hardware capability for Plug and Charge, but whether it’s actually enabled varies wildly by manufacturer. Here’s what actually works in the UK right now:

Fully supported: Pretty much all Porsche Taycans, most Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys built from 2021 onwards (though only on Tesla’s own Superchargers), Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford F-150 Lightning, newer Mercedes EQS and EQE models, Polestar 3, and the Cupra Born in some configurations.

Theoretically capable but not enabled: This is the frustrating category. Loads of VW Group cars (ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, Enyaq) have the hardware but it’s often not switched on, or only works on specific networks. Some Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 models fall into this category too.

Not supported: Older EVs, most Chinese imports at the moment, and anything that predates about 2020.

The honest truth is that even if your car is listed as compatible, you often need to dig through settings menus or contact your dealer to actually activate it. I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to get it working on a Cupra Born before discovering it needed enabling through the car’s connected services menu.

Which Charging Networks Support It?

Even if your car’s ready, you need a charging network that’s playing along. Here’s the current state of play:

Tesla Superchargers: Work perfectly with Teslas. That’s it. The network is gradually opening to other brands, but Plug and Charge remains Tesla-only.

Ionity: This is the gold standard for cross-brand Plug and Charge. Works with the widest range of vehicles, and in my testing, it’s been the most reliable. When it works, it’s genuinely excellent.

bp pulse: Rolling out support, but it’s patchy. Some of their 150kW and 300kW chargers support it, others don’t. The company says full rollout is ongoing, which is corporate speak for ‘soon, probably’.

Shell Recharge: Limited support on newer high-power chargers.

Not currently supported: Gridserve, Osprey, InstaVolt, Pod Point, GeniePoint, and most destination chargers.

Does It Actually Work?

I’ve tested Plug and Charge on three different vehicles over the past six months: a Mustang Mach-E, a Porsche Taycan, and a Tesla Model 3. Success rate? About 70%, which sounds terrible until you remember that traditional charging apps also fail a depressing amount of the time.

When Plug and Charge works, it’s transformative. You genuinely just plug in and walk away. I’ve watched people at the next charger wrestling with apps while I’m already in the service station buying overpriced coffee.

When it doesn’t work, you’re stood there waiting for something to happen, then eventually giving up and using the app anyway. The failure modes are usually silent. The car thinks it’s authenticated but the charger hasn’t agreed, or vice versa. You get no error message, just… nothing.

Plug and Charge vs Multi-Network Apps

Here’s the thing: apps like Bonnet, Octopus Electroverse, and Zapmap have got really good at the multi-network problem. One app, loads of networks, reasonably reliable payment. They don’t offer the true ‘plug and walk away’ experience, but they’re often more dependable than Plug and Charge right now.

The advantage of Plug and Charge is that it works when your phone’s dead, when there’s no mobile signal, or when you’ve forgotten your phone entirely. I’ve seen all three scenarios at motorway services.

My practical recommendation: set up Plug and Charge if your car supports it, but keep Electroverse or Bonnet as a backup. You’ll use the automatic charging maybe half the time, and you’ll be grateful for it when you do.

Should This Influence Your Next Car Purchase?

Probably not yet. Plug and Charge is a nice bonus feature, but it shouldn’t be the deciding factor when you’re choosing between cars. The charging network coverage and your car’s charging speed matter far more to your day-to-day experience.

\p>That said, if you’re deciding between two otherwise similar vehicles and one has working Plug and Charge while the other doesn’t, it’s worth considering. The technology will only get more prevalent, and when it works properly, it genuinely makes public charging less annoying.

The frustrating bit is that this should all just work by now. The standard’s been around since 2014. We’ve put people on the moon with less computing power than is in these charging posts. But here we are, in 2024, still celebrating when the car and charger successfully have a conversation without human intervention.

For now, Plug and Charge sits in that awkward category of technology that’s brilliant when it works and invisible when it doesn’t, which means you notice the failures far more than the successes. Give it another year or two, and it might actually live up to the promise. Until then, keep that charging app handy.
