Plug and Charge Explained: Which UK Networks Support It in 2026?

Plug and charge is the EV equivalent of contactless payments: you simply plug in your car, the charger recognises it, and charging starts automatically. No apps, no RFID cards, no tapping screens in the rain. The charger and your car have a quick encrypted conversation, verify your payment details, and you’re charging within seconds.

It sounds brilliant, and when it works, it genuinely is. But after two years of testing it across UK networks, I can tell you the reality is more complicated than the marketing suggests.

How Does Plug and Charge Actually Work?

Plug and charge uses the ISO 15118 standard, which allows your car and the charger to exchange information through the charging cable itself. Think of it like your car carrying a digital wallet that the charger can read and verify.

When you first set up plug and charge, you link your vehicle to your chosen charging account (usually through the manufacturer’s app). From that point on, compatible chargers should recognise your car automatically. The charger checks your car’s credentials, confirms payment details, and starts the session. You get billed through your usual account.

The important bit: both your car and the charging network need to support it. This is where things get messy in the UK right now.

Which UK Networks Support Plug and Charge?

As of early 2026, genuine plug and charge support in the UK remains patchy. Here’s what actually works:

Ionity has the most reliable implementation. If your car supports plug and charge, Ionity sites typically work first time. I’ve tested this extensively with several vehicles and the success rate is consistently high.

Tesla Superchargers support it for non-Tesla vehicles that have the feature, though you’ll need to have added your car to the Tesla app first. It works well, but Tesla’s system is slightly different from the ISO standard, which occasionally causes hiccups.

bp pulse rolled out support across their 150kW and 300kW chargers in 2025. In my experience, it works about 80% of the time, which is decent but not quite seamless.

Gridserve supports it at their Electric Forecourts and newer high-power sites. Reliability is good, though I’ve occasionally needed to use the app as backup.

Osprey announced support in late 2025 and it’s gradually being enabled across their network. Still early days, but initial testing is promising.

Notably absent: InstaVolt, Pod Point, and most destination chargers don’t support plug and charge yet. Given that these networks make up a huge portion of the UK’s public charging infrastructure, you’ll still need apps or RFID cards for a significant number of charges.

Which Cars Have Plug and Charge?

Most EVs launched from 2024 onwards include plug and charge capability, but it’s not universal. Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron GT, most new Mercedes EQ models, Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, and newer Hyundai Ioniq models all support it.

Notably, many Tesla vehicles don’t have traditional plug and charge (they use Tesla’s own system for Superchargers), and some manufacturers still don’t offer it at all on certain models. Always check the spec sheet, because it’s sometimes buried in the options list rather than being standard.

Real-World Reliability: The Honest Truth

When plug and charge works, it’s genuinely lovely. You pull up, plug in, wander off for a coffee. No standing in the rain trying to get an app to load on patchy 4G.

But here’s what I’ve learned from actual use: it fails more often than it should. Sometimes the charger doesn’t recognise the car. Sometimes it recognises it but won’t start the session. Sometimes it works perfectly for months, then mysteriously stops at the same charger that worked last week.

The failure rate varies by network and car combination. With a Porsche Taycan on Ionity, I’d estimate 95% success. With some other combinations, it’s closer to 70%. That’s still better than nothing, but it means you need a backup plan.

Is It Worth Prioritising When Buying an EV?

Here’s my honest take: plug and charge is a nice-to-have, not essential.

If you’re choosing between two similar EVs and one has plug and charge while the other doesn’t, sure, it’s a point in that car’s favour. But I wouldn’t pay significantly more for it, and I definitely wouldn’t choose a car based on this feature alone.

Why? Because the UK charging apps have actually got pretty good. Zapmap lets you start sessions at multiple networks. Octopus Electroverse works across dozens of operators. Most networks’ own apps are reasonably reliable now. Yes, you might need two or three apps installed, but that’s a minor inconvenience compared to range, boot space, or whether the seats are comfortable on a long journey.

The other issue is that plug and charge doesn’t always give you the best price. Some networks offer better rates through specific apps or subscription services. With plug and charge, you’re typically paying the standard rate, which might be 10p or 15p per kWh more than you’d pay with the right membership.

Practical Tips If You Have Plug and Charge

Always keep the charging apps installed anyway. Plug and charge will fail eventually, and you don’t want to be downloading and registering for an app in a car park with one bar of signal.

Check which account you’ve linked for plug and charge. Some cars let you link multiple networks; others force you to choose one. Know which account will be billed before you plug in somewhere expensive.

If plug and charge fails twice at the same charger, just use the app. I’ve wasted too much time unplugging and replugging, hoping it’ll work on the third attempt. It rarely does.

For now, treat plug and charge as a convenience feature that works most of the time, not a fundamental shift in how you charge. In a few years, when more networks support it and reliability improves, it might become the default. But in 2026, we’re not quite there yet. It’s nice when it works, but don’t let its absence be a dealbreaker when choosing your next EV.
