Plug and Charge Explained: Which EVs and Networks Actually Support It in the UK?

Plug and Charge promises to make public charging as simple as plugging in your phone at home. No apps, no RFID cards, no standing in the rain trying to get a contactless reader to work. Just plug in, walk away, and let the charger and car sort out the payment between themselves.

\p>It sounds brilliant, and when it works, it genuinely is. The problem is that in the UK right now, it’s still more promise than reality for most drivers. Let me explain what actually works, which cars support it, and whether you should care when buying your next EV.

How Plug and Charge Actually Works

Plug and Charge (sometimes called Autocharge by certain networks) uses a bit of clever technology called ISO 15118. When you plug in, your car and the charger have a quick digital conversation. The car essentially says “I’m vehicle XYZ123, charge me and bill this account”, the charger checks this against a database, and if everything matches, charging starts automatically.

Think of it like your car having a digital wallet built into the charging port. The charger recognizes your car specifically, not just that it’s a Volkswagen or a Tesla, and knows which payment method to use.

For this to work, three things need to align: your car needs to support the technology, the charging network needs to have implemented it, and you need to have set up your vehicle and payment details with that network beforehand. Miss any one of these, and you’re back to tapping your phone.

Which EVs Actually Support Plug and Charge?

Here’s where it gets frustrating. Plenty of manufacturers talk about Plug and Charge support, but the reality is more limited than the press releases suggest.

The Porsche Taycan (2020 onwards) was one of the first to properly support it in the UK. The Audi e-tron GT (2021 onwards) has it too, which makes sense as they share underlying technology. Both work reliably on networks that support the feature.

Tesla’s Supercharger network has offered something similar for years, but it only works at Tesla chargers and uses their proprietary system rather than the ISO standard. If you own a Tesla, you already know how seamless it is at Superchargers. That’s basically Plug and Charge, just in a walled garden.

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning (2021 onwards) support it in theory, as do newer models from Mercedes (the EQS and EQE from 2022). Genesis vehicles from 2022 onwards, including the GV60 and Electrified G80, claim support. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 (2022 onwards) can technically do it, though it requires activation through the dealer in some cases.

Volkswagen’s ID range is supposed to support it through their We Charge service, but real-world reports suggest it’s patchy at best. The technology is there, but the network implementation hasn’t caught up.

If you’re considering a specific model, don’t just check the spec sheet. Search owner forums for that exact model and year to see if people are actually using Plug and Charge successfully in the UK. The gap between “technically supported” and “works reliably” is often quite large.

Which UK Charging Networks Have It?

This is the bigger problem. Even if your car supports Plug and Charge, most UK charging networks don’t.

Ionity has rolled out Plug and Charge across their UK sites, and by most accounts, it actually works. If you’ve got a compatible Porsche or Audi and you’re on a motorway route with Ionity chargers, you’re in luck.

bp pulse announced support in 2023 and has been gradually enabling it across their network. Real-world reports are mixed, some drivers report it working perfectly, others say it’s unreliable or not active at certain sites yet.

Tesla Superchargers, as mentioned, work seamlessly for Tesla owners. Non-Tesla vehicles can now use some Supercharger sites through the app, but that’s not Plug and Charge, you still need your phone.

Most other major networks, Gridserve, Pod Point, InstaVolt, Osprey, haven’t implemented it yet. They might have it on their roadmap, but right now you’re using an app or a contactless card.

Is It Actually Reliable When It Does Work?

When Plug and Charge works, it’s genuinely lovely. You arrive, plug in, and charging just starts. The receipt appears in your email later. It’s how public charging should work.

But the operative word is “when”. Even on supported networks with supported vehicles, it’s not 100% reliable. Sometimes the handshake fails and you end up using the app anyway. Network connectivity issues, software glitches, or outdated charger firmware can all break the magic.

The technology itself is sound, but it relies on everything working perfectly in the background. That’s a lot to ask from the current state of the UK’s charging infrastructure.

Should You Factor It Into Your Next EV Purchase?

Honestly? It’s a nice-to-have, not a must-have, at least not yet.

If you’re choosing between two otherwise equal vehicles and one supports Plug and Charge, sure, go for that one. It might save you some faff in a couple of years when more networks have implemented it properly. But I wouldn’t pay significantly more for it or choose a car you like less just because it has this feature.

The apps from networks like Zapmap, Bonnet, and Octopus Electroverse already make contactless charging fairly painless across multiple networks. Plug and Charge is more convenient, but it’s an incremental improvement, not a revolution.

For now, if you want the proper Plug and Charge experience in the UK, you’re looking at a Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT and sticking mostly to Ionity chargers. That’s a rather specific and expensive use case. For everyone else, it’s a technology to keep an eye on rather than a reason to choose one car over another.
