Plug and Charge Explained: Which EVs and Networks Actually Support It in the UK?

Plug and Charge is exactly what it sounds like: you arrive at a compatible charger, plug in your car, and charging starts automatically. No app to open, no RFID card to tap, no payment screen to navigate while you’re standing in the rain at a motorway service station. The car and charger recognise each other, authenticate, and sort out the billing without you lifting a finger.

It’s brilliant when it works. The problem is knowing where it actually works, and whether your car supports it in the first place.

How Plug and Charge Actually Works

The technology behind this is called ISO 15118, a communication standard that lets your car and the charger exchange information securely. Think of it like contactless payment for your phone, except your car and the charger are having a private conversation through the charging cable itself.

When you plug in, your car sends a digital certificate (essentially a secure ID) to the charger. The charger checks this certificate, confirms your car is authorised to charge on that network, and starts the session. The bill goes to whichever payment method you’ve registered with that network, usually through their app during initial setup.

The key difference from app-based charging: once you’ve set it up, you genuinely never need to touch your phone again at compatible chargers. No signal issues, no frozen apps, no wondering if the session actually started.

Which Cars Support Plug and Charge in the UK?

Here’s where it gets frustrating. Many EVs have the hardware capability but the feature isn’t activated, or it only works with specific networks. I’ve tested several of these myself, and the experience varies wildly.

Currently working in the UK:

Tesla Model 3 and Model Y (2021 onwards) work seamlessly at Tesla Superchargers. This is the gold standard experience, genuinely effortless. Plug in, charging starts within seconds, done.

Porsche Taycan (all model years) supports it at Ionity chargers, though I’ve had mixed results. When it works, it’s magic. When it doesn’t, you’re back to the app anyway.

Audi e-tron GT (2021 onwards) also works with Ionity, sharing the same Volkswagen Group technology as the Taycan.

Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning (2023 model year onwards in the UK) support it, but here’s the catch: very few UK networks have actually enabled it for Ford vehicles yet. The car is ready, the infrastructure isn’t.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, plus the Kia EV6 (all 2022 onwards), technically support ISO 15118. Hyundai claims it works with Ionity, but in my testing earlier this year, it was hit and miss. Some chargers recognised the car immediately, others required the app.

Theoretically capable but not properly enabled:

The BMW iX and i4 have the hardware but BMW hasn’t fully activated Plug and Charge in the UK yet, despite it working in other European markets. Typical.

Mercedes EQS and EQE models are in a similar situation. The technology is there, the rollout is glacial.

Which UK Charging Networks Support It?

This is the really patchy bit. Even if your car supports Plug and Charge, you can only use it where the network has implemented it.

Tesla Supercharger: Works perfectly with Tesla vehicles. If you drive a Tesla, this is the charging experience everyone else is jealous of.

Ionity: The most advanced network for non-Tesla Plug and Charge in the UK, supporting Porsche, Audi, and theoretically the Hyundai/Kia models. Reliability has improved over the past year, but it’s still not 100%.

bp pulse: Claims to support ISO 15118 at some of their newest 150kW and 300kW chargers, but I haven’t successfully tested this with any car yet. The infrastructure is being prepared, but actual vehicle support seems to be lagging.

Gridserve: Actively working on implementation but not live at the time of writing. They’ve told me it’s coming to their Electric Highway sites, but no firm timeline.

Pod Point, Osprey, InstaVolt: No Plug and Charge support yet. You’re using apps or contactless payment.

Practical Reality Check

Here’s my honest take after testing this across different networks: Plug and Charge is genuinely transformative when it works, but you absolutely cannot rely on it for every charging stop right now.

If you drive a Tesla and stick to Superchargers, you’re golden. For everyone else, treat Plug and Charge as a nice bonus rather than your primary charging method. Keep your charging apps installed and your payment cards registered, because you’ll need them.

The technology itself is sound. ISO 15118 works properly when both the car manufacturer and the charging network have implemented it correctly. The problem is the patchy rollout, with everyone pointing fingers at everyone else about why it’s not more widely available.

My advice: if your car supports it and you regularly use a compatible network, absolutely set it up. The handful of times it works seamlessly will remind you how good EV charging can be. Just don’t expect it everywhere, and don’t buy a car specifically for this feature unless you’re buying a Tesla. For everyone else, it’s still early days, and your phone isn’t going away anytime soon.
